Aww I love this!
I love this too. BUT..especially with the Olympics on..I’d like to point out that a lot of what makes derby so amazing is true of many, many sports. Sometimes I feel like derby gets this rap as being this amazing mystical life-changing experience, which is it, but then it is also portrayed as being unable to occur anywhere else, which I think is untrue. Derby clicks for many people, but for some people it’s lacrosse, or dressage, or water polo. Sports, I’m saying, are universal in their joy.
When I saw the women’s soccer team all leap into each other’s arms after winning, I was like yes, yes girls yes! I KNOW that feeling! When the beach volleyball ladies gave each other little high fives and little taps after doing something great, I saw helmet pats and wristguard high fives after the fourth whistle. As amazing and life-changing as roller derby is, we 100% have to remember our sisters in other sports and support them, and realize what we are experiencing is partly the joy of being on a team, of working toward a common goal as a unit, regardless of any personal differences, supporting each other through losses…and celebrating the victories.
